Moon Greetings – Bellinger Edition
Through the seasons with a year of lunar pauses.

The story
August 2022 – July 2023
Each full moon and new moon for a full 12 months.
A walk through the seasonal changes over a year.
Each Moon Greeting is created from my nature observations of the particular microseason, in a particular place – the Bellinger valley.
Taking a pause to notice
For a full year I made the commitment to pause to notice what was going on around me in the natural world. I chose the full and new moons as the sign to stop and really look around. I’ve done a similar undertaking before. It’s an enjoyable habit to cultivate.
I take a pause from busyness, making time for a quiet contemplative cuppa, or a sensory walk or three. Time to breathe deeply and immerse my attention in the natural world. Time where I allow myself to slow down and marvel at the details and delights all around. I take notes in words and sketches to remember and celebrate the wonders I have enjoyed; different every time.
Place and season
What’s happening around me right here, right now, this location, this season? We each live in a particular place. I’m based in the Bellingen area, Baalijin, on Gumbaynggirr country.
I’m heartily interested in developing my sense of connection to place, in getting to deeply know my area. Drawing requires detailed observation. And so I turned to creating compositions as the seasons rolled onwards. One every two weeks.
Sometimes this would be one or two standout moments that grabbed my attention – a rare spotted bowerbird visit, or the beginning of strawberry season.
Sometimes it would be a compilation of observations – the proliferation of so many varieties of white flowers all at once, or the fluoro luminosity of the yellow trumpet tree woven with the arrival of black drongo birds and their distinctive forked tails.
